Designer Radiators are exciting, colourful and very easy to get a bit giddy about. We have customers who decide to buy them in about 5 minutes flat and rush in with no worries at all, and customers who take weeks and months deliberating their choice, second guessing themselves and overthinking the decisions needed.

Today we have 5 handy questions to ask which will tell you everything you need to know before buying your radiators, so jump right in and make sure you get it right, worry free!

WHERE DO I WANT MY NEW RADIATOR, AND DO THE PIPES NEED MOVING OR ADJUSTING?

Sometimes this is dead easy and you can replace your old radiator with a designer model which is exactly the same size, but often your new radiator will be a different size and hopefully a brilliant new shape!

Speak to your heating engineer and have them survery the intended space to ensure that they can move your pipework to work for your new designer radiator.

HOW MUCH SPACE DO I HAVE FOR MY RADIATOR?

It wants to look just right, so to make sure it does, and to make sure you have the space for it, you will need;

  • Approximately 100mm clearance beneath your radiator (or more)
  • Approximately 100mm clearance above your radiator (or more)
  • Approximately 50mm on each side of your radiator to allow for valves (if they connect to the side of the radiator – underneath connections don’t take up any width)

There is no limit to the depth required, it’s all personal preference, but always consider if there is a door which will open against it, a kitchen table with chairs next to it, if it is in the hallway how much space you will have to walk past it.

HOW MUCH HEAT DO I NEED?

You can put the prettiest radiator in the world on your wall but if it doesn’t have enough hot water or a tremendously large surface area, you’re going to be shivering come winter time (or come summer time in the UK…).

We measure heat output using BTUs, and by using our trusty BTU Calculator you can enter your room dimensions and a little extra information to be told straight away how many BTUs you might need.

If you need 4,000 – 5,000 BTUs, you will know straight away whether the size you have chosen is up to the task.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE BEFORE I NEED THEM TO BE FITTED?

If you realise that your plumber is coming to fit your radiator in three days, then plan for this and look through our Next Day Radiators category. However, if you have more like 4-8 weeks available to you, you suddenly have access to our entire designer range, even the exclusive special order items which take weeks to manufacture and ship over from places like Italy, Germany and Turkey.

DOES MY HEATING SYSTEM HAVE ANY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS?

Before purchasing a designer radiator of any kind it is best to be safe and double check with your heating engineer that your system doesn’t have any special requirements.

This can be rarer things like knowing that you have an open-vented system and should only use stainless steel, or that you have microbore (very thin) pipework, and so can’t get as much pressure to each radiator on the system, meaning that big vertical radiators might not heat up properly as a result.

It never hurts to check with a qualified expert, it could save you an enormous headache!

BONUS – WHICH RADIATOR DO I LOVE?

Most important thing: LOVE YOUR RADIATOR.

We’re in the business of happiness through design, so we whole heartedly insist on going with your gut instinct and getting the radiator of your dreams. It will be an integral, transformative part of your home for years or decades, so the extra investment you make now will be well worth it down the line.
